NOTES

López de Heredia started in the middle of the nineteenth century when French négociants visited the Rioja region to find a solution to the phylloxera blight, which was devastating the vineyards of Bordeaux. Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a wannabee winemaker with a good amount of knowledge came with them. He fell in love with the region and specially the area around Haro, the “capital” of the Rioja Alta Region. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia winery, the oldest in Haro and one of the first three houses in the Rioja region.

The Bosconia reserva is a single vineyard blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha (Grenache), equal amount of Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan) and always small amount of Viura. ìViña Bosconiaî derives it’s name from their ìEl Boaqueî Vineyard, which is historically produced fruit for a Burgundy-style wine their great-grandfather made named ìBorgoniaî. At the time, the wines from Burgundy were bigger and fuller then the Bordeaux, inspiring the family to bottle the wine in Burgundy shape bottles. All of Lopez de Heredia wines are made without chemicals, pesticides, no chaptilzation, only hand-harvesting – ìthe traditional and natural way of Rioja.î Aged for 5 years in American oak, then at least 3 years in bottle before release.

Its color is bright brick-red, clear and brilliant. It is medium-bodied, smooth, and well-balanced, with firm acidity and hints of vanilla from using younger oak.
