César Marquez is the newest, youngest & most exciting winemaker in Bierzo. But he is not exactly new to crushing grapes. César has worked for the past few years as the right hand man to his Uncle, the rock star winemaker Raúl Pérez. Family history in the region granted them access to great vineyards in the small Valtuille area. This is César’s first vintage and shows incredible promise. Where his Uncle challenges our notion of what the wines of this region can be, young César takes a more measured approach, offering a slightly more refined version of the mysterious edges Raul explores. Bierzo is often referred to as the Burgundy of Spain and the family’s wines are excellent examples of this high praise. Parajes stands in as a “Villages” level wine, representative of the entire region, where higher end bottlings, such as Raul Perez’s La Vizcaina ‘El Rapolao’ (co-made with César) offer a glimpse of single “Crus”, or vineyard parcels.
