Francesc Ferre’s family has been farming grapes organically in the region for over 200 years, but only just began making wine in 2009 with then 21 year-old Francesc at the helm, fresh out of school. Terra Alta’s combination of hot, dry days in the Mediterranean sun, evening coastal onshore wind, and cool nights at high elevation allows grapes to maintain their acidity in otherwise arid conditions and makes it an ideal place to grow fresh, vivacious Garnatxa.
What grows together goes together: This is a single vineyard of 3 varieties of Garnatxa all growing together (Garnatxa Gris is an extremely rare mutation of Garnatxa that can make a rosé or a white wine and is only seen in a few vineyards in the world), which were then harvested simultaneously and co-fermented. Francesc only uses the free run juice (no second skin pressing) to keep the wine even more fresh. The result of this work is a wine that speaks of the warm, Terra Alta climate: a fresh balance of the local landscape and the Mediterranean ocean, in perfect harmony.
